Rules for Planting Herb Gardens
Rule Number One: Plant your personal herb garden as near to your kitchen doorway as possible (but keep the next two rules in mind as well). Being able to access your cooking herbs should be as simple a task as retrieving a can from your pantry. Close and easy proximity to your herb garden will facilitate its use as much as possible. Fresh herbs can make even the most banal recipes seem gourmet. Make use of your herb garden to keep your kitchen alive.
Going Green
There are many ways to go greenin today’s world, however, very few of them actually produce anything that actually looks green.
Rule Number Two: Make sure to plant your herb garden in full sun! If you happened to live in a dessert, then afternoon sun would be okay, otherwise, full sun is necessary. This is because herbs that are grown in full sun produce more dense foliage, rich dark colored leaves with higher levels of the essential oils that give you the flavor you want for your cooking. Shade does not do your herb garden justice. It promotes weak, stretched out plants that strive constantly for the sun. The plants will be inferior in appearance and in flavor.
Rule Number Three: Plant your herb garden in its own garden, or with your vegetable garden. Do not use the same plants for landscaping needs. It would be heart breaking to hack away at your carefully plotted landscaping to spice up the evening’s meal. Designate a separate area for all herbs intended for the kitchen and leave your landscaping alone.
